Luke’s gospel gives us Zachariah’s song – a melody that bursts forth from his being as Elizabeth delivers their blessed son, John. He sings these words at the end: “By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”
Zachariah saw the light, in the face of his newborn baby, a promise of the coming dawn, a revolution breaking upon us like the irresistible waves of an ocean, and the way of peace always just beyond the horizon.
