Laying the Tracks

I once saw an advertisement on the subway that said, “Creativity is not driving the train. Creativity is laying the tracks.”

While initially drawn to a statement like this, the more I thought it over the more I disagree. This “lay the tracks” vs. “drive the train” construct of creativity, while clever, especially for a subway ad, does not go far enough. It exemplifies the adage of thinking outside the box but it doesn’t yet realize, like Neo on his first trip to the Oracle, that there is no box.

And when you tap into this understanding of creativity you realize that where we’re going, you don’t need roads, let alone trains and their tracks.
