We Are A Sleepless People

We are a sleepless people. Black and brown folks don’t have the privilege of rest in America. We don’t have night and day, only perpetual terror and fear.

The rest of America might just be waking up, but we stay woke, eyes wide open, unable to shut. Because dare we sleep, dare we close our eyes, when the sun rise another sister or brother is gone. Another hashtag begins to trend. Another body stolen by America’s greatest sin.

We can’t sleep, black and brown folks, because we are a sleepless people.

  1. How would you describe the privilege that you have?
  2. In your own words, what does it mean to be a sleepless people?
