And there were shepherds keeping watch over their flocks by night.
A familiar phrase for anyone who grew up in Christmas pageants.
An angel appeared to them and said, “Fear not for I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be for all people. For today a savior is born.”
Savior. The Hebrew word is Joshua. The Greek translation is Jesus.
In other words, the angels tells the shepherds, “For today, Jesus is born.”
But before these shepherds, the fringe of their society, scamper off in search of this savior, the angel provides one more direction: “And this is how you will recognize him.”
Because sometimes we need someone to help us recognize what Jesus looks like. And once we know what we’re looking for, we find him everywhere.
