Purity Culture

I think one key byproduct of #PurityCulture (as it interacts with other forces like homophobia and fat phobia) could be that it keeps us from making up our own minds about who we are attracted to.

It reinscribes the externalization of fantasy-production at the hands of untrustworthy, norm-making storytellers. Instead of being able to work out our attractions (in any way), we are left with narratives, images, and norms that have been given to us.

If we aren’t allowed to have any sexual thoughts (much less actions!) how are we supposed to discern and decipher our attractions as they take shape?

  1. How has  Purity Culture impacted your life?
  2. What narratives, images, and norms have been given to you?
