A Necessary Narcissism

Anyone who’s job requires them to stand up in front of a group of people and say something semi-coherent requires a certain degree of necessary narcissism.

You have to believe that the words you will say are worth hearing and might even make a difference in someone’s life or our world. Whether it’s a sermon or a lecture or a podcast or a blog post, this “putting yourself out there” is only possible because of your “slightly too big for your own britches” ego.

But hopefully your ego knows how to deflate its big head, maintaining a sense of humility as the words you said or wrote are just that: words, nothing more. You were just the one to write them down or say them out loud.

Stop talking about them and start doing something.
