I landed in JFK last Friday evening. The driver took my bags and put them in the trunk and opened the door for me to get in the car. I looked at the dashboard and the driver’s name is, wait for it, Muhammad Islam. And I thought to myself, this is going to be an interesting ride if I strike up a conversation with this man.
I thought of things I could say without fully letting him in: I’m a motivational speaker, I work for a nonprofit. But I didn’t want to lie, so I said, “Well, um, I’m a pastor at a Christian church.” And then I said, “As-salaam-alaikum.”
“Wa-alaikum-salaam,” he responded.
We pulled up to our building and I said to him, “Peace, be with you.”
“And also with you,” he responded.
It seems he knew more about my faith than I thought he did too.
- What was the last time you encountered someone from a different faith tradition?
- What difference would it make if you learned more about other faith traditions?
