Can you imagine life before light bulbs? This was a time when your circadian rhythm was naturally in sync with the rhythms around you, when sunrise and sunset were literal alarm clocks rather than photos to post on Instagram.
The simple technology of wax and a wick was the beginning of a change, giving us a taste for artificial light and the ability to control time. But the risk of a cow kicking a lantern was still too high.
And so along came Tesla and Edison and the rest, giving us not only light, but control over the darkness.
Because to some extent, technology has always been about control.
