This is why Marissa Alexander matters:
She is a Christian, a black woman, a mother, a human, who, in the course of defending herself from her alleged abusive husband, now unjustly faces 61 years in prison.
The system should be set up to protect victims like Marissa, not to punish, and certainly not to send the message that black bodies are not worth defending.
Micah 6:8 tells us that the Lord requires us to do justice. This is our calling on this earth as Christians. We cannot sit idly by. We must demand the Florida free Marissa Alexander.
We must declare to the world that black lives matter.
