The Heresy Of Exclusivity

Every now and then someone on the Christian corners of the internet throws down the “H” card, calling someone out for the line they’ve crossed and labeling them a Heretic.

But when this scarlet letter comes over the use of inclusive language for God, as if God’s preferred gender pronouns were within our control, I think the wrong heresy is being called out.

For it is not inclusivity that is a heresy, but rather exclusivity. It is heretical to conceive of a God that we can contain, as if our contextual cataphatic were the entirety of the the divine. We need the apophatic voice, the diverse representation, the margin brought to the center.

God is _______. God is not _______. God is not, not _______.

Go ahead, fill in the blank. It’s the most orthodox thing you can ever do.
