The Final Say

It took me a long time to learn no one is the judge of me.

And this isn’t quite true, because in many ways I’m judged all the time – at school, at work, on the Twittersphere – everything I say and write is criticized.

But if you aren’t careful this judgement will eat you alive, as the comedian Jenny Slate said about a low point in her career: “I felt I had to sit still and be quiet until someone told me what the verdict is on me.”

And this is the terrible side of judgement, the side that stifles creativity and leads us to forget we’re all people, we’re all more than the sum total of our mistakes.

So let’s stop giving judgement the final say.
