Big Mamma’s Blues

A reflection on Psalm 44:

Big Mamma’s blues.
What was that prayer Big Mamma used to sing?
She used to testify in church, telling how great a God you are, how you’re an on time God, how you can make a way out of no way.
And yet Ferguson has taught us that Selma is now, that we are more incarcerated than ever, and that we’re still afraid of one another.
Are you awake, God?
I’m way down yonder by myself and I can’t hear nobody praying.
What was that prayer Big Mamma used to sing? Oh yes.
Precious Lord, take my hand,
Lead me on, let me stand,
I am tired, I am weak, I am worn.
