I have over three decades of evolutionary biology that has hardwired me to avoid pain, discomfort, and any whiff of a negative emotion. Or, as my CPE supervisor puts it, I prefer to live in a land of “Snoopies and rainbows.”
400 hours of CPE have been an experiment in dipping my toe into the waters of this world I habitually avoid. I’m learning what it means to be human and what it means to join my fellow humans in the myriad of experiences we encounter.
I’m really good at rejoicing with those who rejoice. But CPE is inviting me to discover the necessity of weeping with those who weep.
